Training Tool — Not Professional Advice

Keep the Lights On (the Corporate Resilience Exercise) is an independent training and awareness tool. It is not produced by, affiliated with, or endorsed by any standards body, regulator, insurer or professional institute. It does not constitute legal, regulatory, security or business continuity advice.

Purpose & Scope

This exercise is designed to support reflection and awareness training for the people who manage a business through disruption: crisis and incident managers, continuity leads, and the functional leads they depend on. It provides a structured decision-making exercise based on a realistic but entirely fictional scenario.

It is intended to complement — not replace — your organisation's own crisis management framework, business continuity plan, formal training, and exercises facilitated by qualified practitioners. Completing it does not constitute a business continuity exercise for the purposes of any standard, certification or audit.

Fictional Scenario

Exercise Lockout is entirely fictional. Harbourline Group, its systems, its people, its customers and the events of the scenario do not exist. Any resemblance to a real organisation, incident or individual is coincidental.

Accuracy & Currency

Decision options and feedback panels reflect widely used crisis management and business continuity practice, including ISO 22301, ISO 22361, NCSC incident management guidance and ICO breach reporting guidance, as understood at the time of writing. Where a legal duty is described, the feedback names the source. This content may become outdated as standards, legislation, regulatory guidance and good practice evolve.

Users should always verify decisions and procedures against their organisation's own plans, current legislation and regulatory guidance, and qualified professional advice. The exercise content should not be used as the sole basis for any real-world decision, and in particular is not legal advice on notification, contractual or insurance obligations.

No Liability

The tool is provided as-is, without warranty of any kind — including as to completeness, accuracy, fitness for a particular purpose, or freedom from error. The creator accepts no liability for any loss, harm, or consequence arising from use of this tool, reliance on its content, or decisions made in real incidents by individuals or organisations who have used this exercise.

The scoring system and outcome ratings are designed to support reflection and discussion. They should not be used to assess individual competence, make employment decisions, or form part of any formal performance record.

Data & Privacy

This tool does not require an account or log-in, and it uses no tracking cookies or cross-site advertising trackers. To understand how it is used and improve it, we may collect a small amount of anonymous data:

The only time you would send us personal information is if you choose to submit feedback through a feedback form, where one is offered: it asks for a name, email and message, which are sent to our feedback service so we can read and respond. Feedback is entirely optional.

Your exercise results and decision log exist only in the browser tab you are playing in. They are not transmitted, and they are not saved to your device either — closing or reloading the tab discards them. If you want to keep a record, use Save Result as PDF on the results or decision-review screen before you leave; where that file goes is entirely your choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this based on a real company or a real incident?
No. Harbourline Group and Exercise Lockout are fictional. The scenario is constructed to be realistic — the shape of a ransomware incident, the clocks that run, the decisions each function faces — but it is not based on any actual event or organisation.
Is it certified against ISO 22301 or any other standard?
No. The content is designed to be consistent with ISO 22301, ISO 22361 and public guidance from the NCSC and ICO, but it has not been reviewed or accredited by any standards body. It should be used as a supplementary awareness tool, not as a substitute for a formal exercise programme.
Does completing it count as a business continuity exercise?
Not on its own. It works well as a primer or discussion aid before or during a facilitated exercise, or as self-directed learning for a resilience team. Whether it forms part of your exercise programme is a decision for your organisation and its auditors, not something this tool can determine.
Can I share it with my team?
Yes. Share the URL. The tool works on any modern browser with no login or installation. You are welcome to use it in team sessions, resilience workshops, or as self-directed learning.
Can we get a version with our own systems, sites and plan in it?
Potentially yes — the engine is built so that the organisation, its services and the framework it cites can be swapped for yours. Get in touch via the Contact tab and tell us what you have in mind.
The content seems outdated or incorrect — what should I do?
Please tell us. We want the exercise to reflect current practice and guidance accurately. Use the Contact tab to flag any specific decision, feedback panel, or reference that you believe is wrong or out of date. Include the role and phase if possible.
Does it work offline?
Largely yes — once the page has loaded, the exercise runs in your browser and keeps working if you lose connection. When online it sends the anonymous usage events described in Data & Privacy; these are sent in the background and don't affect the exercise. The main external dependency is the Google Fonts stylesheet loaded at startup. On a locked-down network, fonts may fall back to system fonts but the exercise will still work.
Can I use the scores to assess staff competence?
No. The scoring system is designed to drive reflection and post-exercise discussion, not to measure individual competence. Scores vary by role, by familiarity with the scenario type, and by the inherent ambiguity of some decisions. They should not be used for performance review, selection, or any formal assessment purpose.
What data does it collect about me?
No account, no log-in, and no tracking cookies. We may collect anonymous, aggregate analytics and anonymous usage events (which role you play, your progress and completion) — none of it identifies you. Your decision log and results never leave the browser tab you are playing in and are discarded when you close it. The only personal data we would ever receive is what you voluntarily type into a feedback form, where one is offered.
Are more scenarios planned?
A regional power outage — the scenario the name promises — is the natural second exercise, and loss of premises a third. No timeline yet. Tell us what your organisation needs — demand shapes the roadmap.
